What does Selin think her narrative is? Returning to the grad school manuscript that would become The Idiot , Batuman looked back at her year-old self. The short story is a fundamentally unironic form, and for this reason I think it is doomed. And there was no mention of me. I think her correspondence with Ivan is on that level, the level of being stuck at language. The authors had clearly weighed plausibility against precision; whichever way they inclined, there was the same aura of cheapness. Our generation seems far too aware that reading is safe and fun, that literature is spectacle.

I got to some point where one of my favourite lines was different, and I was like, did I just hallucinate a whole different book that was the book that I wanted it to be? In a way you could think of it as selection for the most self-critical, miserable people.

I was thinking about what to take out and what to leave in, and a big guiding principle to me was that if something was funny, if something really made me laugh when I reread it, then I almost always left it in. Returning to the grad school manuscript that would become The IdiotBatuman looked back at her year-old self. She enjoys their odd, pretentious exchanges, and though unsure about meeting him face to face, begins to write herself into a romantic narrative: When the available literary forms no longer match the available real-life bauman, the novel can reabsorb the mismatch and use it as material. Going through the drafts, I thought, what had I experienced in life and writing? She set out to edit and rewrite what became The Idiotthe autobiographically inspired story of Selin, an year-old Turkish-American girl, during her first year at Harvard in batkman I already felt quite world-weary by the end of high school.
