Orwell appears to be looking for acceptance yet at the same time he dislikes the very people the Burmese that he is seeking acceptance from. There were several thousands of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans.
It is as though he wants to be seen in a good light by the Burmese.
